In October 2017, social media was flooded with women and men all over the world joining together in one powerful voice: #MeToo. Kate Farnham was one of those women. The timing of the #MeToo campaign was fortuitous. Farnham had just returned from a songwriting workshop in Chicago, where she had found a small, supportive community. They sent her home with a powerful message: “Write what you’re afraid to write about. Write from the juices.”
Over the past decade, Farnham had kept her journey of trauma and recovery private, trying to navigate the post-traumatic effects in silence and isolation. But when the #MeToo movement took hold, she knew it was time for me to step out of the shadows and live her truth. Through the creation and recording of this song, Farham finally found the courage to speak her truth, and she shares it with the hope that her story might offer some comfort or healing to other survivors.
Farnham knows firsthand how much it hurts to survive sexual trauma. She knows there is an inner child mourning in those who have survived, and it feels like one will never get our sense of trust and safety back. However, survivors are not their shame. Survivors are not defined by their pain or trauma, and they are living proof of how much strength and resilience the human soul is capable of. Survivors are courageous, resilient women.
