Music Review: Daniel Redwood – “Sanctuary Song”

From the compilation album The Compassion Project: Songs for Animal, Human, and Earth Justice

The acoustic guitar opens with graceful fingerpicking, setting a gentle, reverent tone. Then Daniel Redwood’s earthy baritone enters with the soul-piercing line: “You are someone, not something.” In this one phrase, the entire truth of animal sanctuaries unfolds. It’s a statement both heartbreaking and healing — a voice of deep recognition for the individual lives too often ignored.

Redwood welcomes all — “with your broken wing, or wounded leg, or branded skin” — and as the song unfolds, it becomes a sacred offering to every animal who has ever been given refuge, dignity, and love. The song moves through themes of trauma and recovery, condemning human violence while lifting up the joy of liberation.

A stunning cello solo by Sascha Groschang brings a soulful depth, mirroring the emotional layers of the song. Each note feels like a prayer. Vocally, Redwood is joined by Monique Danielle on harmony, adding tenderness and solidarity to his message. “Sanctuary Song” is more than a folk ballad — it’s a spiritual invocation. It speaks directly to those who have opened their homes and hearts to animals in need, and to those who may be just awakening to the idea that compassion is a practice, not just a feeling.

The accompanying video, with moving photography by Redwood’s wife Beth Lily Redwood, deepens the impact. It’s not only a tribute to animals — it’s a reminder of what our world could be when guided by love.

Redwood’s final hope becomes ours: “May the whole world sing for you. May the whole world be for you… a sanctuary song.”
