In “Trees,” Australian recording project Swift Timmy delivers a gentle yet profoundly emotional tribute to the natural world — and a quiet mourning for its slow destruction. Featured on the upcoming compilation The Compassion Project: Songs for Animal, Human, and Earth Justice, the song captures a childlike sense of wonder alongside a deeply adult sorrow.
The track begins with the warm, easy strumming of a ukulele — evoking the feeling of a breezy summer day. Lead vocalist Adelaide Channon enters softly, singing, “Trees, there must always be some trees, blowing gently in the breeze…” Her voice is pure and unembellished, perfectly suited to the song’s tone — innocent, wistful, and sincere.
By the second verse, the composition blossoms gently. Acoustic guitar, piano, and subtle percussion join in, giving the song added texture while maintaining its delicate intimacy. A melodic guitar solo drifts in like a breeze, carefree and lightly mournful. Every layer is placed with intention, serving the emotional arc of the piece without overwhelming it.
What begins as a simple ode to trees expands to include whales and birds,— elements of our planet, the earth, the sky, the ocean, so essential, yet so fragile. The chorus asks plainly and heartbreakingly:
“Why must the planet slowly die? I just can’t stop myself from crying…”
There is no anger here, no shouting. The grief is quiet, contemplative — and perhaps more powerful because of it. Soft harmonies exhale like a sigh at the song’s close, leaving the listener in a state of reflection. The song feels like a lullaby for the Earth — one we may be singing as it slips away.
Written by Tim Channon and performed by a close-knit ensemble of family and friends, “Trees” is a moving and melodic reminder of what’s at stake. It doesn’t just mourn the damage; it pleads — gently — for us to protect what remains.
