About Roots Run Deep
Sylvie Abate wrote the lyrics to “Roots Run Deep.” The song explores relationship loss when deep-rooted issues come into play. The lyrics commence with roots that stem from childhood trauma and the struggle to change our colors later in life. “Roots run deep. Trees grow tall. Leaves bleed their colors and they fall. And who said that love was worth the fall?” The chorus reflects on understanding, forgiveness, and letting go. “Let time run through our darkest days. The only thing that seems to stay the same is our stubborn ways, our stubborn ways. Let time run through our darkest days. The mistakes we made were meant to be erased and washed away, washed away.” Most people can relate to the idea that we all have flaws, but sometimes issues are simply to deep-rooted to overcome in a relationship.

“Roots Run Deep” was released in advance of the concept album, I Walk Out of The Fog. The title, I Walk Out of the Fog, is based on the acronym F.O.G. which stands for Fear, Obligation, and Guilt. The term FOG was first coined by Susan Forward and Donna Frazier in the book Emotional Blackmail and describes feelings that a person often has when in a relationship with someone who has a personality disorder.
Coming from the desire to speak her truth and be a voice for for others, Sylvie explores emotional abuse and recovery through eight songs that were written several years ago. Four songs have been released in advance of the concept album including "Pretty Words", "Flashing Yellow Lights", "Indecision", and "Roots Run Deep." There will be eight songs on the album: (1) Beautiful Disaster, (2) Indecision, (3) Yellow Flashing Lights, (4) Pretty Words, (5) Honey You Lie, (6) Roots Run Deep, (7) Broken Year, and (8) You Can't Take My Voice Away.
